Information about the X23A2 Firewall
The beamline subnet is now behind a firewall. There is currently no way to tunnel through the fire wall from the outside world. This allows us to operate computers and other network devices in a very promiscuous mode. For instance, we can use unsecured ftp to communicate between computers on the subnet. The firewall also protects the Compumotor 6k8's from the outside world.
Our subnet is 10.0.9.X (which is a private network)
Our netmask is 255.255.255.0
The gateway/router is 10.0.9.24 (is that correct??)
Static IP addresses are in the range 10.0.9.51-99
DHCP addresses are in the range 10.0.9.100-254
Our outside IP number is 130.199.192.67

DHCP on the beamline subnet
Just plug your laptop into one of the ethernet switches and set your computer to use DHCP. This will allow you to access files on the beamline computer directly. For all other networking purposes, please use the wireless network.
File sharing between the beamline computer and other computers on the subnet
You can use ftp to connect to the beamline computer. ftp to 10.0.9.51 and login as X23A2 user, password available on request.
For unix-y machines, lftp is a delightful command line ftp client. It's mirror commend is very nice for downloading data from the beamline computer.
On the beamline PC, there is an icon on the desktop and in the quick launcher that opens WinSCP directly in the Users space on both computers
If your laptop is on the subnet, ftp as described above. If your laptop is on the wireless network, you will not be able to share files with the beamline computer.
